Description
Centered in a posterior full-skeleton orientation, the paired fibulae (calf bones) are highlighted along the lateral aspect of each leg, running parallel to the tibiae from the level of the knee to the ankle. Proximally, the fibular head sits inferior and lateral to the lateral tibial condyle, with the slender shaft descending distally toward the lateral malleolus, which lies lateral to the talocrural joint line. Surrounding bony context includes the femora articulating with the pelvic girdle superiorly, the sacrum and vertebral column in the midline, and the posterior thoracic cage with ribs curving anterolaterally from the thoracic vertebrae. A female adult skeletal model frames the relationships without soft tissue. Posterior orientation matters because the fibula is often misunderstood as a simple “second shinbone” when, in fact, it bears limited axial load yet provides key lateral support at the ankle through the lateral malleolus and syndesmotic attachments. The fibular neck is a classic hazard zone: the common fibular (peroneal) nerve winds around it, so fractures here can present with foot drop and sensory loss over the dorsum of the foot.
