Description
Posterior skeletal anatomy frames the fibula (calfbone) in situ from the fibular head proximally to the lateral malleolus distally, with the tibia positioned medial to it along the shin. The highlighted fibula runs lateral and slightly posterior to the tibial shaft, tapering inferiorly where it expands into the distal malleolus at the ankle. Nearby bony landmarks remain visible for orientation, including the femur superiorly, patella at the knee level, and the tarsal bones inferiorly at the foot. Color isolation of the fibula in a rear view makes side-to-side relationships easier to teach, because you can follow the lateral column of the leg without losing the context of the knee and ankle joints. At the proximal end, the fibular neck sits just distal to the head, a key region for common fibular (peroneal) nerve vulnerability in fibular neck fractures and tight casts. This is the fibula’s danger zone.
