Cut through in gross section, the male kidney is opened to emphasize the renal sinus and its surrounding perinephric and renal sinus fat, with the renal artery entering at the hilum and dividing into segmental and interlobar branches that course between the renal pyramids. Blue venous channels track alongside the arterial tree as interlobar and arcuate veins, converging toward the renal vein at the medial border. Inferiorly, the renal pelvis funnels into the ureter, positioned anteroinferior to the main vascular pedicle at the hilum. Color coding separates arterial inflow from venous drainage, making the branching hierarchy legible at a glance. Renal sinus fat matters because it is the space-filling matrix that stabilizes the renal pelvis, calyces, and hilar vessels, and it is the tissue plane you meet during hilar dissection in nephrectomy or donor nephrectomy.
