Description
Posterior abdominal anatomy is rendered with both kidneys in situ, their hila oriented medially toward the abdominal aorta and inferior vena cava. Renal arteries branch laterally from the aorta to enter each hilum, while renal veins course medially to drain into the inferior vena cava, with paired vessels shown in close apposition to the renal pelvis and major calyces. Beige ureters descend inferiorly from the pelves, and a mantle of perirenal (renal) fat surrounds each organ deep to the renal fascia, with fine intrarenal vasculature implied within the parenchyma. Yellow periarterial fibers trace the renal plexus around the hilar vessels. Clear landmarks. This configuration matters when you need to teach or plan around the hilum, where the vein typically lies anterior, the artery intermediate, and the renal pelvis posterior, a relationship exploited in hilar dissection and renal transplantation. Perirenal fat is not just packing material; its thickness and distribution affect surgical exposure and is encountered immediately after opening Gerota fascia during nephrectomy, while close proximity of the ureteropelvic junction to the lower pole makes it a frequent site in obstruction and in crossing-vessel discussions. Vascular orientation also anchors interpretation of CT angiography and venography when evaluating renal artery stenosis, renal vein thrombosis, or preoperative variant anatomy. Use this illustration for urinary system blocks, retroperitoneal anatomy teaching, or as a figure in nephrology, urology, and vascular surgery publications that need an accurate relationship map of the kidneys, aorta, inferior vena cava, renal vessels, ureters, and perirenal fat in an adult male. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
