Description
Seen in lateral profile, the male skull is articulated with the upper cervical spine, placing the occipital bone and cranial base superior to the atlas (C1) and axis (C2). The axis vertebra is distinguished against adjacent cervical vertebrae, with its vertebral body and posterior elements aligned beneath the occiput and posterior to the pharyngeal airway space suggested by the facial skeleton. Anteriorly, the orbit, nasal aperture, maxilla, and maxillary dentition provide craniofacial landmarks for orientation relative to the cervical curvature. Intervertebral discs appear between the subaxial vertebrae, emphasizing segmental spacing inferior to C2. Lateral depiction of C2 matters because the axis forms the mechanical link between the rotating atlas and the more constrained subaxial cervical spine, and it is the vertebra most often discussed in the context of odontoid and pars interarticularis injuries.
