Description
Seen from the lateral aspect of a right male knee, the patellar ligament runs in a near-vertical band along the anterior joint line, extending from the apex of the patella to the tibial tuberosity on the proximal tibia. Superior to it, the patella sits anterior to the distal femur, with the femoral condyle and trochlear surface forming the posterior bony contour of the extensor mechanism. Lateral to the tibial plateau, the fibular head marks the posterolateral corner, helping orient the viewer to the relationship between the tibia and fibula. Articular cartilage caps the contacting surfaces of femur and tibia. Clear landmarks. Functionally, this view emphasizes the patellar ligament as the distal continuation of the quadriceps tendon, transmitting extensor force across the knee while also guiding patellar tracking against the femoral trochlea.
