Seen from a posterior full body perspective, the extensor digitorum is traced from its humeral origin at the lateral epicondyle into the dorsal forearm, where the muscle belly tapers into four tendons that pass deep to the extensor retinaculum and fan out across the dorsum of the hand. Distally, the tendons course superficial to the metacarpals and approach the digits as dorsal expansions, positioned between extensor carpi radialis longus and brevis on the radial side and extensor digiti minimi on the ulnar side. Proximally in the arm, the relationship to the lateral supracondylar ridge and the posterolateral elbow contour provides orientation for the extensor compartment. Dorsal anatomy, laid out end to end.
