Posteriorly, the thoracic cage is presented with paired costae curving laterally from the thoracic vertebrae, their heads and tubercles articulating at the costovertebral and costotransverse joints. The inferior ribs are distinguished in blue, corresponding to the false ribs (typically ribs 8 to 10, with ribs 11 and 12 often considered floating), positioned inferior to the true ribs and directed anterolaterally toward the costal margin. Thoracic spinous processes form the midline column, with the vertebral levels running superiorly toward the cervical region and inferiorly toward the lumbar spine and sacrum.
