Description
Prominent in the anterior thorax are the paired first ribs (costa I) curving inferolaterally from their costochondral junctions toward the vertebral column, with their anterior ends meeting the manubrium at the first sternocostal joints. Superior to the manubrium, the clavicles are highlighted and run laterally from the sternoclavicular joints toward the acromia, forming the anterior struts of the shoulder girdle. Midline vertebral bodies and the spinous process line are visible posteriorly through the rib cage silhouette, giving clear orientation from the lower cervical region into the upper thoracic spine. Symmetry matters here. This anterior view is a practical teaching angle for the thoracic inlet, where the first ribs form the bony ring that frames the apices of the lungs and defines the superior boundary of the thoracic cavity. Clinically, costa I serves as a landmark in thoracic outlet syndrome and in central venous access, because the subclavian vessels and brachial plexus traverse the narrow interval bounded by the first rib, clavicle, and scalene musculature, and an elevated or anomalous first rib can contribute to neurovascular compression.
