Description
Oblique lateral anatomy of the male thoracic cage centers on ribs 8 through 10 (costae VIII–X), the so-called false ribs, highlighted along their posterior origins at the thoracic vertebrae and their anterolateral curvature toward the costal margin. Each rib articulates proximally with its corresponding thoracic vertebra at the costovertebral and costotransverse joints, then sweeps anteriorly and inferiorly along the lateral chest wall. Anteriorly, these ribs do not reach the sternum directly; their costal cartilages converge to join the cartilage of rib 7, forming the inferior contour of the costal arch. Intervertebral discs and the thoracic spinal curve provide orientation behind the rib heads and necks. False ribs matter because they define the mobile lower thoracic cage, a region stressed by respiration and blunt trauma, and they sit immediately superior to the diaphragm’s costal attachments. Fractures of ribs 8 to 10 are common in lateral impacts and can track inward toward pleura and upper abdominal organs, with rib 9 and 10 injuries raising concern for splenic or hepatic trauma depending on side.
