Description
Arising from the posterior surface of the humerus inferior to the radial (spiral) groove, the medial head of triceps brachii occupies the deep, medial portion of the posterior compartment of the arm and lies largely distal to the long and lateral heads. Its fibers run inferiorly to converge on the common triceps tendon, which inserts on the olecranon of the ulna, forming the dominant posterior contour of the elbow in this posterior perspective. Superficial landmarks that logically frame the field include the posterior deltoid proximally and the posterior forearm extensor mass distally, with fascial planes and tapering tendons continuing toward the wrist and hand. Clear separations. Focusing on the medial head matters because it is the workhorse of elbow extension across a wide range of loads and joint positions, and it is the portion most likely to remain active when the shoulder is flexed, where the long head becomes mechanically disadvantaged. This posterior arm view also sets up the relationship between triceps and the radial nerve as it traverses the radial groove between heads, a frequent point of vulnerability in midshaft humeral fractures and in posterior approaches to the humerus. Olecranon insertion is a surgical landmark. Teaching faculty can drop this artwork into upper limb anatomy labs to clarify the layered organization of the triceps brachii and to distinguish deep medial head fibers from the more superficial lateral head in posterior dissection.
