Description
Posteriorly, the triceps brachii forms the dominant muscular contour of the upper arm on both sides, with the long head running medially from the infraglenoid tubercle region toward the olecranon and the lateral head forming the more lateral bulk along the posterior humeral shaft. Distally, the muscle bellies converge into a broad triceps tendon inserting on the olecranon of the ulna, creating the rounded mass just superior to the elbow. Medial and lateral epicondylar regions frame the tendon’s distal approach, while the scapulae sit superior to the humeri and the vertebral column and rib cage anchor the midline thorax. Symmetry matters here. This posterior perspective maps cleanly onto clinical examination of elbow extension and posterior arm pain, because the triceps tendon and its insertional footprint on the olecranon are common sites of tendinopathy and partial tearing after a fall on an outstretched hand or a sudden eccentric load. The relationship of the long head to the posterior axillary region also supports teaching of proximal triceps strains and helps distinguish posterior shoulder pathology from true elbow extensor weakness.
