Description
Centered in the mid thoracic spine, the ninth thoracic vertebra (T9) is presented from a posterior perspective with its elongated spinous process slanting inferiorly and overlapping the laminae of the level below. Flanking the midline, the paired laminae converge into the spinous process while the superior and inferior articular processes sit posterolaterally, framing the zygapophysial (facet) joints. Laterally, the transverse processes project toward the rib-bearing region, and the pedicles bridge forward toward the vertebral body, although the posterior elements dominate this view. Posterior morphology at T9 matters because thoracic spinous processes are long and steep, a pattern that drives surface anatomy and complicates level localization in the operating room and on fluoroscopy. Palpation of thoracic spinous processes often misleads clinicians by one level because the tip of a spinous process lies inferior to its vertebral body, and the mid thoracic region is a common site for compression fractures and metastatic lesions that alter kyphosis and load the facet joints.
