Description
Seen from a superior perspective within an opened posterior cranial fossa, the cerebellar hemispheres flank the midline vermis, their folia producing the characteristic tightly folded cerebellar cortex. The primary fissure is identifiable on the superior surface, separating the anterior lobe (rostral) from the posterior lobe (caudal), and the hemispheric convexities curve laterally toward the inner table of the occipital bone. Surrounding bony landmarks of the cranial base are implied by the sectioned skull, with the posterior fossa forming an inferior cradle for the hindbrain. Midline orientation stays clear. This view matters when you need to teach lobar organization and fissural landmarks without the distraction of brainstem clutter, because the primary fissure is the key divider used in gross anatomy and in operative descriptions. Neurosurgeons plan midline suboccipital and paramedian retrosigmoid corridors around these relationships, and pathology often respects them: superior cerebellar infarcts (SCA territory) can involve the superior hemispheres and vermis, while cerebellar tumors may distort folial anatomy and compress the fourth ventricle, driving obstructive hydrocephalus. Orientation in the posterior cranial fossa is unforgiving. Getting the midline right prevents wrong-side thinking.
