Description
Seen from above, the cerebellar hemispheres lie bilaterally and are separated along the midline by the vermis, with tightly packed folia and intervening fissures creating the characteristic laminated surface. The primary fissure can be appreciated as the key landmark dividing the anterior lobe anteriorly from the posterior lobe posteriorly, running roughly transverse across the superior surface. At the anterolateral margins, the superior view also orients you to where the cerebellar peduncles converge toward the brainstem (metencephalon), even when the peduncular bundles themselves are partly obscured by the hemispheric cortex. Symmetry dominates. For teaching lobar anatomy, a superior perspective is the cleanest way to ground the primary fissure and the vermian midline before moving to sectional anatomy or vascular territories. Clinically, that fissure matters when correlating lesion patterns: midline vermian involvement tends to produce truncal ataxia and gait instability, while more lateral hemisphere pathology skews toward ipsilateral limb dysmetria and intention tremor, findings common in posterior fossa stroke, tumor, or alcohol-related cerebellar degeneration. This orientation also mirrors what you mentally reconstruct when reading posterior fossa MRI, where folial crowding, mass effect, and effacement of fissures can signal edema or early herniation. Neuroanatomy and neuroscience courses can use this plate to introduce cerebellar surface landmarks, vermis-versus-hemisphere functional localization, and the anterior versus posterior lobe division before students tackle sagittal and axial MRI. Medical publishers often pair it with brainstem and fourth ventricle artwork to explain cerebellar peduncle connectivity and posterior fossa surgical corridors.
