Description
Running along the lateral aspect of the right lung, the lateral pulmonary vein is shown returning oxygenated blood from the peripheral parenchyma toward the hilum, where it joins the superior or inferior pulmonary venous drainage en route to the left atrium. Proximal to the hilum, the vein lies anterior and inferior to the right pulmonary artery in the typical hilar arrangement, while the bronchus occupies a more posterior position. Superiorly, the trachea bifurcates at the carina into the main bronchi, and the right main bronchus gives rise to lobar and segmental branches that course posterior to the pulmonary vessels. Blue venous channels contrast with red arterial pathways across the cardiopulmonary interface. This relationship matters in right-sided hilar dissection and pulmonary resection, where veins are frequently controlled first to reduce congestion and bleeding, but an accessory or prominent lateral vein can be mistaken for a small arterial branch if you lose the anterior-posterior layering at the hilum. It also supports interpretation of contrast-enhanced CT angiography and venography, where pulmonary venous variants affect planning for atrial fibrillation ablation and help explain patterns of pulmonary venous stenosis or post-lobectomy venous outflow obstruction.
