Description
Arcing across the anterolateral aspect of the proximal leg, the circumflex fibular artery is shown curving around the neck of the fibula just inferior and lateral to the lateral tibial condyle. The vessel tracks deep to the soft tissues that bracket the knee, in close neighborhood to the fibular head and the proximal tibiofibular joint, with the distal femur and patella forming the superior anterior bony frame of reference. Red arterial channels and accompanying blue veins outline the periarticular vascular network, situating the circumflex fibular branch among the genicular region vessels that wrap the joint. Anterior visualization of this artery matters because it sits near a high risk zone for lateral knee procedures and trauma: the fibular neck, where the common fibular (peroneal) nerve also winds superficially. Small in caliber but surgically relevant, the circumflex fibular artery can contribute to collateral flow around the knee when the popliteal artery is compromised, and it may be encountered during approaches to the proximal tibia, lateral meniscus work, or fixation around the fibular head. Orientation to its course helps you anticipate bleeding sources and preserve regional perfusion.
