Description
Running along the anterior forearm, the flexor carpi radialis is highlighted superficially as it descends from the medial epicondyle region toward the radial side of the wrist, its muscle belly tapering into a long tendon. Distally, the tendon courses anterior to the carpus and continues into the palm toward its insertion on the bases of the second and third metacarpals, lying lateral to the palmaris longus when present. The palmar aponeurosis is rendered as a pale fibrous sheet over the central palm, with flexor tendons to the digits passing deep to it toward the proximal and middle phalanges. Metacarpals and phalanges provide distal bony context in anatomical position. Clinically, this anterior exposure makes the flexor carpi radialis tendon easy to teach as a surface landmark for volar wrist anatomy, because the radial artery typically lies immediately lateral to it at the distal forearm and wrist. A reliable surface landmark. Surgeons often use the interval along the flexor carpi radialis for volar approaches to the distal radius and scaphoid, so understanding its relationship to the palmar aponeurosis and adjacent flexor compartments helps prevent iatrogenic injury and guides safe retraction. Overuse tendinopathy at the wrist, pain with resisted wrist flexion and radial deviation, and intersection with de Quervain region differentials all become easier to explain from this layout.
