Description
Centered in the mid thoracic spine, the seventh thoracic vertebra (T7) is presented from an anterior aspect with the vertebral body dominant in the foreground and the adjacent intervertebral discs superior and inferior to it. Bilateral pedicles arise posterolaterally from the vertebral body, leading toward the vertebral arch; the transverse processes project laterally but are partially foreshortened from this perspective. Along the lateral margins of the vertebral body, the superior and inferior costal demifacets are positioned for articulation with the head of a rib, a defining thoracic feature that helps you distinguish T7 from lumbar levels. An anterior view of T7 matters because it matches how the vertebral bodies are assessed on many teaching models and correlates directly with clinical localization on plain radiographs and CT when counting levels from the cervical spine to the thoracolumbar junction. Mid thoracic vertebral bodies commonly serve as reference points in trauma patterns (wedge compression fractures) and in metastatic disease, where anterior vertebral body collapse can narrow the spinal canal indirectly by altering posterior element alignment.
