Description
Centered in the mid-thoracic spine, the sixth thoracic vertebra (T6) is highlighted in an anterior view, with the vertebral body forming the broad weight-bearing column between adjacent intervertebral discs. Along the posterolateral margins of the body, the superior and inferior costal demifacets are visible as paired articular surfaces that receive the head of the sixth rib and share a joint surface with T5 and T7. Superiorly and inferiorly, the vertebral endplates border the disc spaces, while the pedicles and posterior elements fall mostly behind the body in this projection. T6 sits just inferior to T5 and superior to T7, maintaining the gentle kyphotic contour typical of the thoracic spine. Anterior emphasis on the vertebral body and demifacets is where thoracic spine anatomy becomes clinically specific, because costovertebral and costotransverse joints tether motion and influence pain patterns. Degenerative disc disease at T6 to T7 or osteophyte formation at the demifacets can irritate adjacent structures and contribute to focal mid-back pain that worsens with rotation or deep inspiration. Subtle height loss of the T6 body is also a common teaching example for anterior wedge compression fractures, where the anterior column collapses while posterior elements remain comparatively preserved.
