Description
Anterior sectional anatomy centers on the pyloric orifice (ostium pyloricum) at the distal end of the stomach, where the pyloric canal narrows to meet the duodenal bulb. The pyloric antrum lies proximal and slightly to the left, while the first part of the duodenum continues distally and to the right from the gastric outlet. Surrounding the aperture, the pyloric sphincter forms a circumferential thickening of the muscularis externa, with the mucosal folds of the stomach converging toward the lumen at the gastric aperture. An anterior section through the pyloric region matters because it clarifies the relationship between the lumen, the pyloric ring, and the immediate postpyloric duodenum, a junction where pathology concentrates. Adult hypertrophic pyloric stenosis can narrow the pyloric canal and delay gastric emptying, and peptic ulcer disease often targets the duodenal bulb just distal to the pylorus, where edema or scarring may mimic a fixed gastric outlet obstruction. Endoscopists also reference this anatomy when describing passage through the pylorus during EGD, distinguishing antral narrowing from true pyloric stenosis.
