Description
Anterior sectioning through the right heart exposes the right atrioventricular orifice (ostium atrioventriculare dextrum) as a broad, oval opening between the right atrium and right ventricle. Leaflets of the tricuspid valve occupy the rim of the orifice, with their free margins directed inferiorly into the ventricular cavity, where chordae tendineae descend to the anterior, posterior, and septal papillary muscles. Medially, the septal leaflet lies adjacent to the interventricular septum, while the anterior leaflet extends anterolaterally toward the right ventricular free wall. The atrial aspect frames the orifice superiorly, while the ventricular inflow tract sits inferior and slightly anterior in this cut. This perspective is the cleanest way to teach how the tricuspid valve apparatus forms a functional unit rather than three isolated cusps: annulus, leaflets, chordae, and papillary muscles aligned along the direction of blood flow from atrium to ventricle.
