Description
Posterior anatomy of the left lung is presented with emphasis on the vertebral surface (facies vertebralis) as it drapes along the left side of the thoracic vertebral column. The apex rises superior to the level of the first rib, while the base rests inferiorly against the diaphragm, and the posterior border descends more vertically than the anterior border, which normally carries the cardiac notch. Near the medial aspect, the hilum region sits anteromedial to the vertebral surface and leads into the root of the lung, where the left main bronchus and left pulmonary artery lie in close proximity to the pulmonary veins within the mediastinal pleura. For teaching and clinical orientation, a posterior view clarifies how much of the lung contacts the paravertebral gutters and why posterior auscultation best samples upper and lower lobe air entry. This perspective also supports discussion of pleural pathology: posterior pleural effusions layer dependently, and thoracentesis planning often references posterior rib spaces while avoiding the intercostal neurovascular bundle along the inferior rib margin.
