Description
Arising from the anterior root of the helix, the crus helicis (crista helicis) projects medially into the conchal bowl and forms a ridge that separates the cymba conchae superiorly from the cavum conchae inferiorly. Lateral to this ridge, the helical rim curves posteriorly and superiorly, while medially the smooth concavity of the concha funnels toward the external acoustic meatus. Anteriorly, the crus approaches the region of the tragus and incisura anterior auris, creating a recognizable boundary line within the auricular cartilage. A small but consistent landmark. Surgeons and proceduralists rely on this ridge when orienting themselves on the anterior auricle, because it helps define the conchal topography used for otoplasty planning and for placing incisions that minimize visible contour distortion. The crus of the helix also matters in auricular reconstruction after trauma or microtia, where recreating the transition between helix and concha prevents a flattened conchal appearance and improves the perceived depth of the conchal bowl. In surface anatomy teaching, it is one of the best cues for distinguishing cymba from cavum when palpation is limited by swelling, perichondritis, or hematoma.
