Description
Anteriorly, the male auricle is presented with emphasis on the helix, the outer rim that curls from the root of the helix superiorly and posteriorly before sweeping inferiorly toward the lobule. Medial to the helix, the scapha forms the longitudinal fossa between helix and antihelix, while the concha sits deeper and more medial, leading into the external acoustic meatus. At the anterosuperior margin, the crus of the helix bridges toward the conchal bowl, and the tragus lies anterior to the meatal opening with the antitragus positioned inferior and slightly posterior. Small contours matter. Clinically, an anterior view of the auricular helix clarifies common sites of trauma and lesion distribution, including auricular hematoma along the cartilaginous framework that can progress to cauliflower ear if not drained and compressed. The helical rim is also a frequent location for nonmelanoma skin cancers on sun-exposed pinnae, and this angle helps distinguish helical margin lesions from those arising in the conchal bowl, which can track toward the external auditory canal. For procedural teaching, the relationship of the helix and antihelix to the concha provides reliable surface landmarks when planning otoplasty maneuvers such as antihelical fold creation or conchal setback. Use this illustration in head and neck anatomy teaching (external ear surface anatomy), dermatology and ENT references on pinna lesion mapping, and surgical education materials covering otoplasty planning and auricular trauma management in the clinic or emergency department. It also fits patient-facing consent documents where clear identification of the helical rim and adjacent landmarks reduces ambiguity. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
