Description
Arising from the auricular cartilage near the root of the zygoma, the helix forms the outer rim of the male pinna (auricle) as it curves superiorly, then posteriorly and inferiorly toward the lobule. Medial to the helix, the scapha (fossa of the helix) separates it from the antihelix, while the concha sits deeper and more anterior, leading into the external acoustic meatus. At the anterior superior margin, the helix root blends into the adjacent temporal region overlying the zygomatic arch. Cartilage defines the contour. Clinically, the helix is a common site of trauma-related deformity and postinflammatory contour change because its thin skin and perichondrium leave auricular cartilage vulnerable to hematoma and subsequent fibrocartilaginous overgrowth (classic cauliflower ear). This rim anatomy also guides otoplasty planning: surgeons often reshape the antihelical fold and set-back the auricle while preserving the helix as the outer boundary that determines the ear’s silhouette from anterolateral viewing. For dermatology and head and neck oncology, the helix represents a high sun-exposure zone where actinic keratoses and basal cell carcinoma frequently cluster, and margins are planned with respect to the helical rim and adjacent scapha.
