Description

Anterior auricular cartilage is rendered with emphasis on the crus helicis (crista helicis) as it projects from the root of the helix and sweeps posteriorly toward the concha. The ridge sits superior and slightly anterior to the cymba conchae, forming part of the boundary between cymba and cavum conchae. Lateral to it, the helix rim arcs around the auricle, while the antihelix rises posteriorly and medially as the next major fold. Skin coverage is kept thin to keep the cartilaginous relief readable. Recognition of the crus helicis matters in otoplasty planning and in reconstructive ear work where small contour errors read immediately from an anterior perspective. A prominent or blunted root of the helix can mimic, or be mistaken for, an overdeveloped antihelix, and that distinction influences suture placement and cartilage scoring strategies. Piercing and trauma also cluster around the conchal bowl and helical root, where perichondritis and subsequent cartilage deformity can distort the conchal landmarks you rely on. Use this asset for head and neck anatomy teaching on the external ear, surface anatomy labs, and ENT or plastic surgery materials describing auricular cartilage landmarks and approaches. It also fits patient-facing otoplasty brochures that need a clean, anterior orientation with correct relationships to the concha. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
