Description
At approximately 28 weeks of gestation, the fetus lies curled in a flexed attitude within the amniotic cavity, seen in profile with the head directed to the upper left and the limbs drawn toward the midline. Body proportions are those of the early third trimester: a large rounded cranium with a modelled auricle, subcutaneous fat beginning to smooth the contours of the trunk and limbs, and fully formed fingers and toes on the fetal hand and foot. The translucent amniotic sac membrane separates the fetus from the vascularised uterine wall, while the umbilical cord, with its coiled umbilical vessels visible through the covering, runs from the anterior abdominal wall to the chorionic plate of the placenta in the upper right of the field.
