Description
The fetus lies curled in a flexed attitude within the amniotic cavity, head inferior and to the left, with the spine curved and the limbs drawn toward the trunk. The upper limbs are folded across the chest and the lower limbs are tucked so that the plantar surface and individual toes face the viewer, giving a clear read on the proportion of the large head to the trunk at this stage. The umbilical cord leaves the anterior abdominal wall and spirals upward to the placenta, its two umbilical arteries and single umbilical vein visible as helical vessels beneath the translucent amnion. The discoid placenta is attached to the uterine wall superiorly, its fetal surface fanning into chorionic vessels, while the surrounding endometrial lining shows fine vascular markings. Fine scalp hair, the developing external ear and subcutaneous fat over the shoulders complete the third-trimester appearance. At 27 weeks the fetus stands at the threshold of the third trimester, a period defined clinically by rapid brain growth, alveolar and surfactant maturation, and increasing viability with neonatal intensive care support.
