Description
The fetus lies in a flexed attitude inside the intact amniotic sac, surrounded by amniotic fluid and enclosed by the vascularised uterine wall. The head is positioned to the lower left with the auricle, closed eyelids, nose and lips clearly modelled, while one hand rests near the mouth and the lower limbs are drawn up so that the sole and toes of one foot approach the face. The rounded thoracic and lumbar curvature of the fetal spine reflects the physiological flexion typical of the third trimester, and the subcutaneous fat now smooths the contours of the limbs and cheeks. Superiorly, the umbilical cord runs from the ventral abdominal wall toward the placental disc applied to the uterine lining, its vessels faintly visible through the translucent membranes. By 33 weeks the fetus occupies most of the uterine cavity, and relative amniotic fluid volume decreases as growth continues, so this depiction is useful for discussing fetal lie, presentation and engagement in late pregnancy.
