Description
At approximately 35 weeks of gestation the fetus fills most of the uterine cavity, shown here in a flexed attitude with the spine curved, the limbs adducted against the trunk and one hand raised beside the cheek. The head is well formed with fused eyelids closed, scalp hair present and subcutaneous fat smoothing the contours of the cheeks, shoulders and thighs. The translucent amniotic sac, containing a diminished volume of amniotic fluid relative to fetal size, encloses the body while the coiled umbilical cord passes across the face and neck toward its placental insertion. Behind the fetus the discoid placenta lies against the myometrium, and the outer uterine wall displays a fine network of endometrial and serosal vasculature.
