Description
Exposed endocardium lines the internal surface of the left ventricle, where coarse trabeculae carneae form a spongy meshwork along the apical and lateral ventricular wall. Muscular ridges run longitudinally from the apex toward the mid-ventricular cavity, separated by deep intertrabecular recesses. The trabeculated zone transitions proximally into the smoother inflow region near the base, where the endocardial surface becomes less ridged as it approaches the mitral apparatus. Clear visualization of the left ventricular trabecular part matters when you need to distinguish normal trabeculation from left ventricular noncompaction, a cardiomyopathy defined by prominent trabeculae and deep recesses that communicate with the ventricular cavity on echocardiography and cardiac MRI. This internal surface is also a practical landmark in surgical and interventional planning, since the apex and lateral wall trabeculations can trap thrombus after anterior myocardial infarction or complicate catheter navigation during ventricular tachycardia mapping. Normal variants exist. Pattern and distribution are the point. Cardiology and anatomy faculty can use this illustration to teach ventricular chamber morphology, contrast the trabeculae carneae with papillary muscles and chordae tendineae, and anchor discussions of imaging criteria in echocardiography and MRI sections.
