Seen from a lateral perspective within the male orbit, the common tendinous ring (annulus of Zinn) sits at the orbital apex, encircling the optic canal and the medial part of the superior orbital fissure. From this fibrous annulus, the rectus extraocular muscles arise as a muscular cone, with the superior and inferior rectus positioned superior and inferior to the globe and the lateral rectus coursing anteriorly along the lateral wall toward its scleral insertion anterior to the equator. Posterior to the globe, the optic nerve exits the orbit through the ring, while the bony margins of the sphenoid at the apex frame the annular attachment. A tight space.
