Description
Oblique lateral profiling of the male transverse colon segment places the haustrated large-bowel wall in the mid-abdomen, suspended from the posterior abdominal wall by the transverse mesocolon. Superior to the transverse colon, the greater omentum drapes like an apron, while the inferior border of the segment relates to proximal jejunal loops and the root of the mesentery. Proximally, the lumen continues toward the hepatic flexure, and distally it courses to the splenic flexure, with the mesocolic attachment lying posterior and the free taeniae coli and epiploic appendages positioned on the anteroinferior contour in a typical lateral view. Orientation is clear. Lateral relationships matter in this region because the transverse colon is the most mobile portion of the colon, yet it remains tethered by the mesocolic plane that surgeons follow during colectomy and oncologic lymphadenectomy. Appreciating its position relative to the gastrocolic ligament and greater omentum supports safe entry into the lesser sac and helps avoid inadvertent injury to the middle colic vessels during transverse colectomy or extended right hemicolectomy. This is also the segment often mistaken for small bowel on limited laparoscopic views, a common source of disorientation early in cases. Use this illustration in undergraduate gross anatomy and GI blocks to teach mesenteries, peritoneal reflections, and the practical distinction between intraperitoneal colon and retroperitoneal segments.
