Description

Oriented in lateral profile, the male transverse colon is shown spanning the upper abdomen, suspended from the posterior abdominal wall by the transverse mesocolon and draping anterior to the pancreas and secondarily retroperitoneal structures. Superiorly it relates to the greater curvature of the stomach through the greater omentum, while inferiorly it overhangs loops of jejunum and ileum within the midsection of the great gut. The right colic (hepatic) flexure sits higher and more fixed near the liver, with the left colic (splenic) flexure positioned more superior and posterior under the spleen. Mobility varies along its course. Spatial orientation matters here because the transverse colon is the most mobile segment of the colon, and its mesocolic attachments define surgical planes and pathways for spread of infection or malignancy. This lateral view clarifies why transverse colon volvulus, though less common than sigmoid volvulus, can present with marked upper abdominal distension and why reduction hinges on understanding mesenteric length and fixation points. It also supports interpretation of CT findings in suspected large bowel obstruction, where a redundant transversum can fold inferiorly and mimic small-bowel pathology. A key landmark. Suitable for teaching peritoneal relationships in gross anatomy and gastrointestinal modules, and for illustrating operative approaches such as transverse colectomy, mobilization of the hepatic or splenic flexure, and entry into the lesser sac via the gastrocolic ligament for pancreatic exposure. Publishers can pair it with diagrams of the mesocolic plane and lymphatic drainage along the middle colic vessels for oncology and colorectal surgery texts. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
