Description
Viewed from the left side of the heart, the left atrium is opened to emphasize the ostia of the pulmonary veins, with the venous vessels removed so only the round to oval openings and their lumina remain. The smooth-walled posterior atrial chamber forms the dominant field, contrasting with the more anterior and medial atrial structures that are not the focus. Superior and inferior pulmonary venous openings are implied by their typical vertical arrangement on the posterior wall, separated by a thin atrial septal region medially and bordered laterally by the left atrial wall.
