Description
Viewed from the right lateral aspect, the left atrium is opened to expose the ostia of the pulmonary veins and their funneling into the atrial cavity. Superior and inferior pulmonary venous openings from the right lung lie more posterior and rightward, while the left pulmonary venous openings are positioned more leftward and slightly anterior relative to the posterior atrial wall. The smooth-walled left atrial reservoir occupies the posterior heart, superior to the mitral orifice and posterior to the aortic root. Orientation is clear. For electrophysiology and structural heart work, pulmonary venous anatomy is not academic detail, it sets the map. Atrial fibrillation triggers commonly arise from myocardial sleeves extending onto the pulmonary veins, so the number, size, and spacing of venous ostia influence ablation strategy and the risk of post-procedural pulmonary vein stenosis. Right-sided viewing also helps when teaching the relationship of the venous confluence to the interatrial septum region where transseptal puncture provides access for left atrial catheterization. Use this illustration in gross anatomy and cardiothoracic modules to teach the left atrial inflow tract, in EP lab materials to explain pulmonary vein isolation targets, or in radiology-aligned texts to correlate with CT/MR identification of variant pulmonary venous return and common venous trunks.
