Description
Posteriorly oriented, the left atrial wall is presented with the four pulmonary venous ostia visible as discrete openings, two right and two left, arranged in paired superior and inferior positions. The right pulmonary vein openings sit on the right posterolateral aspect of the left atrium, while the left pulmonary vein openings lie symmetrically on the left posterolateral side, with the superior ostia located cranial to their inferior counterparts. Atrial myocardium forms the rim of each lumen, and the interostial tissue bridges the pairs across the posterior atrial surface. No intraluminal vessels extend from the ostia, keeping attention on the inlets themselves. Posterior left atrial anatomy matters when you need to orient to pulmonary venous drainage without the distraction of variable venous branching.
