Description
Seen from the left cardiac aspect, the left atrium is oriented posteriorly, receiving four pulmonary vein openings arranged as paired superior and inferior orifices on the right and left sides of the atrial wall. The left superior and left inferior pulmonary vein ostia sit more laterally, approaching the left atrial appendage anterolaterally, while the right-sided ostia lie more medially, nearer the interatrial septal margin. Each opening is rendered as a discrete lumen, emphasizing the smooth posterior left atrial surface that contrasts with the trabeculated appendage.
