Description
Left lateral anatomy centers on the root of the pulmonary trunk (truncus pulmonalis) as it emerges anteriorly from the right ventricle at the level of the pulmonary valve. Immediately superior to the right ventricular outflow tract, the vessel ascends and passes leftward, lying anterior to the ascending aorta at its origin before approaching the left pulmonary artery bifurcation region. The pulmonary trunk sits within the pericardial sac, with the left atrial appendage and the left margin of the heart expected posterior and slightly inferior in this projection. Orientation at the pulmonary root matters when you need to teach or plan around the right ventricular outflow tract and the pulmonic valve complex. A left-sided perspective clarifies how the pulmonary trunk crosses the midline and relates to the ascending aorta, which is central when describing congenital outflow abnormalities such as transposition of the great arteries, double-outlet right ventricle, or postoperative anatomy after arterial switch or RVOT patch reconstruction. It also supports interpretation of echocardiographic RVOT views and CT angiography where the proximal pulmonary artery caliber and valve plane are assessed. Short and wide at the origin.
