Seen from posterior, the left border of the heart is traced by the lateral contour of the left ventricle as it sweeps inferiorly toward the apex, with the base positioned superiorly where the left atrium forms much of the posterior cardiac surface. The left atrial appendage sits anterosuperior to this margin but still influences the perceived curvature near the atrioventricular groove. Medially, the posterior interventricular sulcus approaches the diaphragmatic surface, helping define where the left cardiac margin transitions from the posterior surface to the inferior (diaphragmatic) aspect. Orientation of the left cardiac border matters when you are correlating surface anatomy with posterior thoracic imaging and intraoperative landmarks. On posterior-anterior chest radiography, cardiomegaly from left ventricular dilation often shifts and rounds the left heart contour, while left atrial enlargement more characteristically elevates the left main bronchus and can produce a double density rather than simply expanding the left margin.
