Description
Curving within the left lower quadrant, the adult male sigmoid colon (colon sigmoideum) is rendered with its characteristic S-shaped course between the distal descending colon and the proximal rectum. The loop lies inferior to the descending colon, swings medially toward the midline, then returns posteriorly into the pelvis, where it continues as the rectosigmoid junction. Peritoneal investment and the sigmoid mesocolon define its mobility relative to the more fixed retroperitoneal descending segment. Orientation is presented in profile to emphasize the curvature and overall extent. For teaching and clinical planning, this segment matters because its length and mesenteric laxity drive common failure points, both mechanical and vascular. Volvulus classically twists on the mesenteric axis of the sigmoid, producing closed-loop obstruction and potential ischemia along branches of the inferior mesenteric artery, and the degree of redundancy you see here correlates with that risk. It is also a frequent site of diverticulitis, where inflammation can tether the mobile loop to pelvic structures, complicating colonoscopy and altering the expected path during a low anterior resection. A high-yield bend. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and GI modules to anchor the transition from descending colon to pelvis, or in colorectal surgery texts when describing sigmoid colectomy, rectosigmoid mobilization, and points of torsion in volvulus. It also fits patient-facing or institutional materials explaining why left lower quadrant pain and obstruction often localize to the sigmoid colon in men.
