Description
Positioned on the superomedial pole of the kidney, the adrenal (suprarenal) gland caps the renal superior surface like a flattened, slightly curved pad, separated from the renal parenchyma by a thin plane that corresponds to perirenal fat and renal fascia. A posterior anatomical perspective favors the dorsal contour of the gland and its superior border, with the kidney lying inferiorly and laterally and the gland tucked closer to the midline. The superior surface slopes toward the diaphragmatic side, while the gland’s inferior margin drapes toward the renal hilum region without actually forming it. Orientation of the adrenal gland against the kidney matters because small shifts in this relationship change how you interpret cross-sectional imaging and how you plan safe dissection planes in retroperitoneal surgery. On CT or MRI, adrenal thickening, nodules, and hematoma are judged against expected borders, and the superior aspect often abuts the diaphragmatic crus, a common source of partial volume confusion.
