Description
Arising from the gastroduodenal artery just inferior to the pylorus, the anterior superior pancreaticoduodenal artery descends on the anterior surface of the head of the pancreas, running close to the C loop of the duodenum before turning inferiorly to meet the anterior inferior pancreaticoduodenal artery. Surrounding context in the upper abdominal cavity includes the liver occupying the right upper quadrant beneath the costal margin, the stomach to the left and anterior to the pancreas, and the spleen lateral to the gastric fundus. Deep to these viscera, the abdominal aorta and inferior vena cava course along the anterior aspect of the vertebral bodies, with the kidneys positioned retroperitoneally on either side. This arterial segment matters because it sits at the junction of the celiac trunk and superior mesenteric artery territories through the pancreaticoduodenal arcades, a clinically relevant collateral route when either axis becomes stenosed.
