Description
Centered on the knee region of an adult male lower limb, the popliteal artery runs in the posterior compartment of the knee, deep to the popliteal vein and tibial nerve, before giving off multiple genicular branches that sweep medially and laterally around the femoral condyles and tibial plateau. Superior and inferior genicular arteries course anteriorly to form a periarticular arterial ring, joining with the descending genicular artery from the distal femoral artery and the anterior tibial recurrent artery near the proximal tibia. Red arterial channels contrast with accompanying venous pathways, presented through a transparent soft tissue effect that keeps the bony landmarks readable. Periarticular genicular anastomoses matter when the femoropopliteal segment is compromised, because collateral flow around the knee can maintain distal perfusion despite stenosis or occlusion. Surgeons rely on these relationships during knee arthroplasty and high tibial osteotomy, where retractor placement and periosteal dissection near the medial tibial plateau can endanger the inferior medial genicular artery and contribute to wound-healing problems. Trauma also concentrates here, as posterior knee dislocation can injure the popliteal artery against the posterior capsule and femur. Small vessels, big consequences.
