Description
Posteriorly, the left pulmonary artery gives rise to the superior lobar artery as it courses toward the upper lobe, with a prominent lingular branch directed anteroinferiorly toward the lingula. Segmental branches track alongside the upper lobe bronchus and its divisions, while pulmonary veins lie more anterior and inferior, returning oxygenated blood to the left atrium at the hilum. The trachea and main bronchi sit superior to the heart, and the bronchial tree arborizes laterally within both lung fields as the arterial branches taper into smaller arterioles. Orientation to the superior lobar and lingular arterial pattern matters when you need to separate pulmonary arterial anatomy from bronchial anatomy on imaging or in the operating room. During a left upper lobectomy or lingulectomy, surgeons routinely divide segmental pulmonary arterial branches near the hilum, and a clear posterior perspective reduces the risk of mistaking a vein for an artery when working around the oblique fissure and upper lobe bronchus.
