Description
Running superficially along the left anterolateral thoracoabdominal wall, the thoracoepigastric vein tracks in the subcutaneous tissue between the axilla and the infraumbilical region, forming a longitudinal channel that links the lateral thoracic venous network superiorly with the superficial epigastric venous system inferiorly. Pectoralis major and the serratus anterior occupy the thoracic wall deep to the vessel, with the external oblique and upper rectus sheath region appearing inferiorly as the vein approaches the epigastrium. A lateral male torso view clarifies how this venous pathway courses parallel to the body’s long axis, staying anterior to the latissimus dorsi and superficial to the ribs and intercostal musculature. Small venules and accompanying superficial tributaries may be suggested along its length. Clinically, this vessel matters because it functions as a ready-made collateral venous shunt between the superior vena cava and inferior vena cava territories.
