Description

Running vertically in the superficial fascia of the anterolateral trunk, the thoracoepigastric vein is traced as a long blue channel linking the superficial epigastric veins of the lower abdominal wall to the lateral thoracic vein near the axilla. Pectoralis major occupies the anterior chest, with the deltoid forming the lateral shoulder contour and the biceps brachii and triceps brachii defining the upper arm columns. Inferiorly, the vein courses over the abdominal wall superficial to the rectus abdominis region, then ascends lateral to the pectoral margin toward the anterior axillary fold. Arterial counterparts appear in red, helping orient the superficial venous pathway against the underlying musculature. Attention to this vessel matters because it is a key collateral channel between the femoral and axillary venous territories when deeper routes are obstructed, and it becomes clinically conspicuous as dilated, tortuous superficial veins on the chest and abdomen. In portal hypertension, similar superficial pathways contribute to a caput medusae pattern around the umbilicus, and distinguishing that from a thoracoepigastric collateral pattern helps guide workup.
