Description
Running down the anterior compartment of the leg, the anterior tibial artery is traced from its origin as the popliteal artery passes through the proximal opening in the interosseous membrane to reach the crural extensor group. It descends on the anterior surface of the interosseous membrane, positioned deep to tibialis anterior and extensor hallucis longus, and typically accompanied by the deep fibular (peroneal) nerve. Medially, the tibial crest and tibial shaft form a hard landmark, while the fibula sits lateral and slightly posterior, framing the neurovascular plane between tibialis anterior and extensor digitorum longus. Distally, the vessel crosses the anterior ankle beneath the extensor retinacula to continue as dorsalis pedis on the dorsum of the foot. Clear. Direct. Clinically oriented.
