Description
Running along the anterior compartment of the leg, the anterior tibial artery is traced in lateral profile from its origin at the popliteal bifurcation, passing anteriorly through the proximal interosseous membrane to descend on the anterior surface of the tibia. Distally it courses between tibialis anterior medially and extensor hallucis longus and extensor digitorum longus laterally, accompanied by venae comitantes and the deep fibular (peroneal) nerve. At the ankle the vessel crosses the anterior aspect of the talocrural joint, then continues onto the dorsum of the foot as the dorsalis pedis artery, lying just lateral to the tendon of extensor hallucis longus. Bony landmarks including the tibia, fibula, and tarsals anchor the vascular path. A lateral perspective makes the depth relationships in the crural region easier to teach, especially the artery’s transition from the posterior popliteal fossa into the anterior compartment and its close association with the interosseous membrane. This is the artery accessed for anterior compartment fasciotomy planning and it is the inflow targeted in endovascular treatment of infrapopliteal disease in critical limb ischemia. Palpation and Doppler assessment of dorsalis pedis at the ankle matter in trauma, diabetes, and peripheral arterial disease. Small errors in landmarking cost time. Use this artwork in lower-limb anatomy teaching (gross anatomy, vascular modules, and podiatry curricula), surgical atlases for tibial bypass and ankle approaches, and patient-facing materials explaining pedal pulse checks and diabetic foot surveillance.
